Treatment Options and Home Remedies for Hip Pain

Depending on the condition that is causing your hip pain, you might feel the discomfort in your thigh, inside of the hip joint, groin, outside of the hip joint or buttocks. Sometimes pain from other areas of the body, such as the back or groin from a hernia, can radiate to the hip. If the pain is caused by arthritis, it can get worsen with activity

Treatment Options for Hip Pain:

Treatment for hip pain depends on the the reason of occurrence.
If your hip pain is caused by overuse or sports injuries, treatment can be done with heat, rest, and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. Try to rest the affected joint as much as possible until you feel better. If your your muscle get stretched during exercises, a warm bath or shower can help lessen pain. Another way to relieve hip pain is by holding ice to the affected area for about 15 minutes a few times a day.
If your hip pain is caused by a muscle or tendon strain, osteoarthritis, or tendinitis, you can usually relieve it with an over-the-counter pain medication such as Tylenol or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as Motrin or Aleve. If the pain is caused by rheumatoid arthritis, treatments include prescription anti-inflammatory medications such as corticosteroids, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) like methotrexate and sulfasalazine, and biologics, which target the immune system.
Stop those activities that aggravate the pain and make you feel discomfort. Exercising the hip joint with low-impact exercises such as swimming, stretching, and resistance training can reduce pain and improve joint mobility if you you have arthritis. Physical therapy can also help increase your range of motion. Arthroplasty in which a total hip replacement is done can be considered when osteoarthritis becomes so severe that the pain is intense or the hip joint becomes deformed. Some causes of hip pain, such as fractures or hernias, may need surgical repairs to fix the fracture or replace the hip.
If your pain does not go away, or if you notice swelling, redness, or warmth around the joint, or if you have hip pain at night when you are resting consult your doctor.

Home Remedies for Hip Pain:

Using RICE for Hip Pain Relief:
RICE stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

Rest:

Try to rest the affected joint as much as possible until you feel better. Resting for at least 24 to 48 hours can help relief the pain.

Ice:

Applying an ice pack to the area where you are feeling the pain can reduce inflammation and make your hip feel better. If hip pain is very intense, using ice pack four or five times a day for 10 to 15 minutes at a time is recommended. A plastic baggie filled with ice or a bag of frozen vegetables can be made as an ice pack . Wrap a towel around the ice pack to avoid irritation on your skin.

Compression:

Compression can be used by wrapping a thick ace bandage around the pelvis and hip. Ace bandage are elastic bandages that are commonly used to treat muscle sprains and strains by reducing the flow of blood to a particular area by the application of even stable pressure which can restrict swelling at the place of injury.

Elevation:

Elevating a painful joint can reduce swelling and help relieve pain. Lie back in a relaxed position with the back supported with your feet up to try to get the benefits in your hip.
It is normal to have some muscle soreness a day after exercising, but the soreness should go away as you move throughout the day. But you should pay attention when hip pain comes during exercise or another activity and lingers for hours or days later.

Stretching and Exercising:

As long as you are not experiencing too much pain when you do stretching and exercising, can help relief hip pain. Exercise increases the range of motion in your joint and strengthens the muscles around your hip. But it is very important to choose the right type of exercise when you have hip pain. To protect your hip joint, the following exercises are the preferred choices:

  • Doing yoga
  • Swimming
  • Walking in a shallow pool
  • Walking on a flat surface, whether it is outside or on a treadmill

Activities to Avoid With Hip Pain:

  • It is best to skip these activities when you have hip pain:
  • Exercises that involve moving your leg away from your body, which may include some yoga poses and Pilates exercises
  • Running
  • Doing squats with heavy weights
