Gastritis is an inflammation or swelling of the stomach lining. It can be a painful condition that is often caused by infection, drugs, stress or an autoimmune response. For most people, gastritis is minor and will go away quickly after treatment. But there are some forms of gastritis that can produce ulcers or cause a higher risk for cancer. Your diet plays a important role for your digestive and overall health. The kind of food you eat make a difference in the health of your digestive system. Avoiding some foods and beverages and eating the proper one can help manage the condition.

What to Eat on a Gastritis Diet:

There are certain foods that should be eaten when suffering from gastritis and ulcers because they have a cooling effect on the lining of the stomach and can ease the internal inflammation.
The recommended foods to help with a diet for gastritis include:

Broccoli Sprouts:

Broccoli sprouts are cruciferous vegetables that contain isothiocyanate sulforaphane, which helps kill H. pylori bacteria,because it has an antibacterial effect. The vegetable is also rich in fiber which reduces inflammation.

Apples, Berries, Onions, And Celery:

Eat more flavonoid rich foods like cranberries, onions, apples, and celery. These are powerful antioxidants that control free radicals in the body. This in turn suppresses inflammation.

Garlic:

It has an antibacterial property that can help prevent H. pylori induced gastritis.

Green Tea:

Green tea has catechins, an antioxidant compounds in that help reduce gastritis.

Yogurt, Sauerkraut, Kefir, And Kombucha:

Consume probiotic foods like yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, and kombucha. These are loaded with healthy bacteria that can help fight gastritis. They have live microorganisms to boost immunity and compete with H. pylori bacteria for nutrition and space.

Nuts, Seeds, Whole Grains, And Legumes:

Add plenty of nuts, Seeds, whole Grains, and legumes which are rich in fiber and nutrients. Dietary fiber can help improve digestion and reduce gastric inflammation.

Dark Leafy Greens Vegetables:

Dark leafy greens  such as  kale and spinach are rich in calcium and vitamin B. These can help reduce chronic gastritis which is associated with vitamin B12 deficiency because of impaired absorption of the vitamin in the stomach.

Peppermint:

This can help relieve the symptoms of peptic ulcers.
 
You should have 5 small meals through the day instead of just 3 large meals to prevent further irritation of your stomach lining.

Foods To Avoid If You Have Gastritis:

Eliminate foods that inflame your stomach lining or worsen existing inflammation. Foods that should cut down on or avoid completely to make your gastritis more manageable include:

Chili And Hot Peppers:

Spicy foods do not cause gastritis but may worsen  inflamed stomach lining. These may give you a heartburn.

Deep Fries And Baked Foods:

These fatty foods are heavy on your system and not easy to digest.

Coffee, Citrus Juices, And Sodas:

These are all acidic drinks and can worsen an irritated stomach lining. Avoid carbonated drinks that are used as drink mixers too.

Processed And Fast Foods:

Canned and packaged foods have preservatives and artificial flavoring agents which can raise  irritation and inflammation.

Alcoholic Drinks And Beverages:

Alcoholic Drinks And Beverages are one of the major cause for gastritis. Always avoid or limit your intake of Alcohol.

Milk, Soy, And Their Products:

When you have symptoms of gastritis it is always better to limit your consumption of whole milk, milk products (cheese, curd, chocolates, and shakes), soybeans, and soy products (soy milk and tofu) to be on the safer side.

Tomatoes:

Tomatoes are full of antioxidants but they are also acidic in nature and better avoided when you have gastritis.
