Cystic acne is the most serious type of acne which can result from a combination of bacteria, oil, and dry skin cells that get trapped in your pores. When pores become blocked by excess sebum, skin cells, and bacteria, an infection can rise up in the pore. Cystic acne is a result of the most severe types of pore blockages. A large, inflamed acne lesions form deep within the skin and result in painful, large bumps visible from the surface.
Although anyone can develop acne, cystic acne mostly occur in people with oily skin. It is also more common in teens, women, and older adults with hormonal imbalances. During the onset of puberty, severe cystic acne causes are triggered by hormonal changes. Sebum is an oily substance that comes out of the pores to help protect and lubricate the skin, keeping it soft. The level of androgen hormones increases during puberty.

This results in more oil on the skin and inside pores, which can lead to development of acne. People under stress can unconsciously pick at the skin, which can worsen acne and cause scarring.

Self-care does not completely prevent cystic acne breakouts. It can help keep them under control and reduce painful symptoms. Taking care of your skin is the best way you can help prevent cystic acne. This can be done as follow:

  • Wash your face once a day in the evening using a mild cleanser that removes excess dirt and oil. Scrubs can irritate existing inflammatory acne and make it worse.
  • Avoid picking at your skin. Even picking less severe forms of acne can lead to cystic buildups.
  • Always select makeup products that are labeled as noncomedogenic and oil-free which are less likely to clog your pores.
  • Always clean your makeup before going to bed.
  • Wear sunscreen every day. This will help prevent sunburn from acne medications that may sensitize you to sun exposure, as well as skin cancer.

Lifestyle Changes to Reduce Cystic Acne:

Some of the following lifestyle changes can also improve your overall skin health and reduce cystic acne:

  • As stress is linked to acne breakouts, try to find ways to completely eliminate or at least reduce unnecessary stress in your life.
  • Avoid foods that have high glycemic levels such as white breads, pastas, and rice, as well as sweets and desert.
  • Wash your face and body after working out to remove oil and bacteria.
  • As cystic acne does not respond to traditional treatment therapies, it is essential to see a dermatologist to determine the best course of treatment, whether it is a prescription medication or surgical removal .

Your dermatologist can also help you prevent recurring cases of acne. Cystic acne can also lead to significant scarring. Leaving the cysts alone can also help prevent them from coming back. Skin care treatments can take several months before you see significant results.
